National Research Prize 2020 “Leonardo Torres Quevedo”, in the area of Engineering, José Capmany, Professor of Photonics at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and Director of the Photonics Research Labs-iTEAM.

In his opinion, if the work being developed “is supported by quality research, it can be transferred and can have an impact”. For an academic, “being able to close the circle is very satisfying”.

Capmany recognises that “being able to close this circle” “is very difficult in any country, but also in Spain”, because being able to create a startup, especially in the field of deep technology, that has “a business model that works” when trying to apply cutting-edge technology is something complex.

“Being able to increase the business of this type of startup is based on knowing how to take advantage of the matching between the knowledge developed and being able to foresee what is going to emerge in the coming years. And Capmany has achieved this with startups such as iPronics or VLC Photonics, recently acquired by the multinational Hitachi High-tech.
