A system of DVD technologies for the rapid detection of Covid-19

Researchers at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) have developed a new system at laboratory level that allows the rapid, cheap and effective detection of COVID-19. It is a biosensor system, based on DVD technologies, which detects specific antibodies (G, M and A) and SARS-CoV-2 antigens -distinguishing them in addition to those of influenza- in a safe manner, in less than 30 minutes, by analysing samples of serum or saliva. The price of the test is estimated at less than two euros.

“This is a semi-automatic system, consisting of a microfluidic disc and a reader based on DVD technology, which performs tests in microarray format with high sensitivity and selectivity”, points out Ángel Maquieira, Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Director of the Institute of Molecular Recognition and Technological Development (IDM) at the UPV.
