The Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and Huawei Technologies have set up the first joint research unit that the Chinese multinational is promoting in Spain. Its objective: to advance towards the future 6G communications network. “Huawei has decided to invest in various centres around the world and in Spain has chosen the Polytechnic University of Valencia for its international leadership in the field of telecommunications and, mainly, 5G technologies”, says Narciso Cardona, Director of the Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and Professor at the UPV’s School of Telecommunications Engineering.
The creation of this research unit at the UPV is the result of almost two years’ work. It will all begin in June 2019, with the celebration in Valencia of the Global 5G Event, organised by the iTEAM of the Universitat Politècnica de València. “That event made Valencia the world capital of 5G and reinforced the international leadership of our university in this field. Even then we had an interview with the president of Huawei, the first contacts that now bear fruit in the setting up of a pioneering research unit in our country”, Cardona points out.
