Startups that dare with cancer

Technology has always been a great ally of medicine, both in terms of diagnosis and treatment, and today it is no less so. Likewise, those related to cancer are the pathologies that arouse most general interest due to their high prevalence. However, there are still few startups that dare to enter this field given the long process required to research a product, the risk that it will eventually fail, and the intensive capital required to come to market.

“We are very Lean, of cheap prototyping, of doing the tests in the most economic way possible to validate and then, once the effectiveness of the product has been demonstrated, to patent it and license it so that the pharmaceutical companies or other companies with sufficient lung power can produce and market it”, explains Alfredo Azabal, member of the Up Devices team. This startup, whose solution is still in the validation phase and is working in collaboration with the La Paz Hospital in Madrid, aims to extend the application of what is known as photodynamic therapy, a selective treatment currently used for some skin carcinomas, but which does not reach all parts of the body.
